Smart Switch Randomly Turns Lights On

Lights coming on by themselves is almost always one of three things. Work through them in this order.

1. Check for a schedule you forgot about

A schedule, timer, or scene set months ago will keep firing. Open the Deako app, tap the clock icon, and look at everything listed there, including schedules set to sunrise or sunset.

Sunrise and sunset schedules use civil twilight, so they fire 20 to 40 minutes off the times a weather app shows. That catches a lot of people out. See Understanding Sunrise and Sunset Times in the Deako App.

2. Check anything else that can control the switch

If you've connected Deako to Alexa, Google Home, Alarm.com, SmartThings, ADT, or a control system, any routine on that side can turn your lights on. Check the activity or history in that app too. Also worth asking anyone else with access to your home in the Deako app.

3. Check the wiring

If there's no schedule and no integration behind it, the cause is usually in the backplate rather than the switch. Two things to look at:

  • Hot and Load reversed. The two black wires on the backplate are Hot In and Load Out. If they're swapped, switches can behave erratically, turning on by themselves or cycling. Swapping them back fixes it.
  • Missing neutral. Without the white neutral wire connected, a switch may work briefly, stay on, or act unpredictably.

Narrow it down with a switch swap

Move the switch to a different location that you know works properly. If the problem follows the switch, it's the switch. If the problem stays in the original spot, it's the wiring there. See How to Diagnose an Issue Using a Switch Swap.
