Your switches need WiFi for app control away from home, schedules, control system integrations (Alarm.com, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings), and firmware updates.
Deako switches use 2.4 GHz WiFi only.
Not sure which generation you have? The Smart Switch (Gen 2) is model DS2023 and its serial number starts with 322. Everything else is Gen 1. The model number is on the sticker on the switch, and the serial number is shown in the app under the device's settings.
Adding a new switch
You'll be prompted to connect to WiFi during setup. → Add a Device to the Deako App
Updating WiFi on a switch you already have
First, check that the Deako app can control your switches. Stand near them with Bluetooth turned on and turn one on and off from the app. WiFi credentials are sent over Bluetooth, so if a switch won't respond to a tap, it won't receive credentials either.
If nothing responds, try these in order:
- Close the Deako app and reopen it
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on
- Check that the Deako app has Bluetooth and Location permissions in your phone's settings. Both are required for the app to find your switches.
- Restart your phone

Once you can control a switch from the app, send your WiFi details:
- Tap the gear icon → Wi-Fi Settings → Network.
- Enter your network name and password. If you have a Smart Switch (Gen 2), you can pick your network from a list instead. The list takes about 30 seconds to fill in.
- Tap Continue. Your credentials go out to one or more switches and each shows its own status. Each switch takes about 30 seconds to report back, so give it a few minutes if you have several.
- Once at least the top 1-2 switches show Connected, you can leave the screen. Those switches can bring the others online.
- If every switch reads Failed to connect, tap the error message, check your network name and password, and try again. → Step 1: Check your WiFi name and password
Your bridge device
Your bridge device stays online and relays messages from the internet to the rest of your switches. It's the one to get online first, and it can bring other switches of the same generation online.
It also carries your integrations. Alexa, Google Home, Alarm.com, and SmartThings commands all reach your switches through the bridge, so if the bridge is offline those stop working even when the switches themselves are fine.
See yours in Wi-Fi Settings. → What's a WiFi bridge and how do I check what device is my bridge?
- Gen 1: you pick the bridge.
- Gen 2: picked automatically based on connectivity. If your bridge goes offline, another online Gen 2 switch takes over within 24 hours.
If a switch won't connect
- Retype the network name and password by hand. Both are case sensitive.
- Confirm your phone can join the same network. If it can't, your switches can't.
- Power cycle the switch: pull it out of the wall, put it back, wait 60 seconds. → Power cycle a device
- Delete any switch from the app that is no longer installed in the wall. A removed switch will keep showing as offline until it's deleted. → Deleting a switch from the Deako app
- Delete the switch from the app, factory reset, re-add. The last setup page shows whether it connected. → Factory Reset a Device
