Before you start
Most setups that fail come down to one of these three things for Smart Devices. They take about 30 seconds to check.
- Stand at the switch, phone in hand for Smart Devices. During setup the app talks to the switch over Bluetooth. Be in the same room, within a few feet.
- Turn Bluetooth on and check the app's permissions. In your phone's settings, the Deako app needs both Bluetooth and Location enabled. Both iPhone and Android require Location permission before any app is allowed to scan for Bluetooth devices, which is the only reason Deako asks for it.
- Have your Wi-Fi name and password handy. Deako switches join 2.4 GHz networks only, not 5 GHz.
Check which switch you have
Only Smart devices connect to the app. The model number is on the sticker on the back of the switch.
- Smart Switch (Gen 2), model DS2023. Connects to the app.
- Smart Switch, model DS2005. Connects to the app.
- Smart Dimmer and Smart Plug. These connect to the app.
- Simple Switches (Motion Sensor, Nightlight, Timer, Dimmer, Ceiling Fan Controller, Ventilation Timer, Astronomical Timer). These don't connect to anything. They're controlled at the wall by design, so they won't appear in the app and nothing is broken if they don't.
Adding Switches to the Deako App
- Open the Deako app and tap the gear icon on the Home page.
- Tap Add, then Device.
- Walk to the switch and press and hold the center of the switch for about five seconds, until the LED starts flashing blue. Flashing blue means the switch is in pairing mode and your phone can find it.
- Your switch shows up in the app. Tap it to select it. The LED changes to flashing white while the two connect.
- Follow the prompts to name the switch and set its location and type.
- Tap Get Devices Online, then enter your Wi-Fi name and password and tap Continue.
- The LED turns solid white. That's it. The switch is on your account and online.
Adding more than one? Repeat these steps for each switch. Your Wi-Fi credentials carry over, so later switches are quicker.
If the light is controlled by more than one switch
In a multiway (two or more switches controlling the same light), install every switch in that circuit first, then add them to the app.
Smart Switch (Gen 2) switches link themselves. Right after you install them they may click, blink, or turn the light on and off on their own for up to a minute. That's Magic Linking, and it's supposed to happen. Wait until the LEDs turn off before you start adding them to the app.
All the switches in one circuit have to be the same generation. Gen 2 and the previous Smart Switch won't link to each other, and Simple Switches won't link at all.

The switch has no LED light at all
If nothing lights up, it isn't a pairing problem. A Deako smart switch that won't boot is almost always one of two things: it isn't getting a neutral wire, or it's the wrong switch for that location.
1. Check the neutral wire
Deako smart switches need a connected neutral wire to run their electronics. Without one the switch won't boot at all and the LED stays dark.
"But my old switch worked fine." It would have. Standard rocker switches don't use the neutral wire at all, so a rocker works normally in a backplate where the neutral was never connected. A working rocker doesn't tell you the wiring is complete.
In a multiway, where the light is controlled from more than one place, the pattern tells you where the problem is:
- If there's no neutral at the Line location, no switch in that circuit will boot anywhere.
- If there's no neutral at the Load or 4-way Line location, the switch boots in the Line position but not in the next one along.
2. Check the switch is right for that location
"Location" here means how many wall switches control that one light. Some Deako switches only work in one arrangement, and in the wrong one they won't power up.
- One switch controls the light (bedroom, bathroom, pantry). Use a Smart Switch or a Single Pole Smart Dimmer. A Master or Remote Smart Dimmer won't work here.
- Two or more switches control the light (hallway, staircase, open-plan kitchen). Use Smart Switches in every position, or one Master Smart Dimmer plus a Remote Smart Dimmer in each of the other positions. A Single Pole Smart Dimmer won't work here.
Every position in a multiway has to be a Deako smart switch of the same type. Leaving a rocker in one spot, or mixing Smart Switch generations, will stop the circuit working properly.
See Switch Compatibility for 1 to 5 Switch Setups for the full table.
Installing Master and Remote Smart Dimmers? The slot matters
In a multiway, only one position can take the Master. Install the Remotes first, one at a time. After each one goes in, watch for a green flash at the bottom within a few seconds:
- It flashes green. That slot is right for a Remote. Leave it there.
- Nothing happens. That's the Master's slot. Take the Remote out and try it in a different position.
Keep going until every position has a Remote except one, then put the Master in the slot that's left. A Remote sitting in the Master's slot looks completely dead, and it's the most common reason a brand new Smart Dimmer seems faulty. A quick way to test the wiring
- Put a Smart Switch into the backplate. If it flashes green behind the config button, it has power and the neutral is connected.
- Then put a Single Pole Smart Dimmer into the same backplate. A green flash means the polarity is right too.
- If the Smart Switch flashed green but the Single Pole Smart Dimmer doesn't, the line and load wires are reversed in the backplate. They're in each other's ports and need swapping.

If it lights up but won't pair, read the LED
The light on the switch will tell you what went wrong. Find what you're seeing:
| The LED is doing this | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| Flashing green | The switch is booting up, which also confirms it has power and a connected neutral. Give it a minute, then try again. |
| Flashing blue, but the app never finds it | The switch is ready; your phone isn't seeing it. Fully close and reopen the Deako app, then check Bluetooth and Location permissions. See Troubleshooting Bluetooth connection issues. |
| Flashing red twice | Pairing didn't take. Factory reset the switch and start over. |
| Flashing blue and red | A pairing error. Factory reset the switch and try again. |
| Flashing white and red | The switch paired with your phone but can't reach Wi-Fi. Check that you're giving it a 2.4 GHz network and that the password is right. See Smart Switch/Dimmer Won't Connect to WiFi or Shows as Offline. |
| Flashing purple | The switch is linking to its multiway partners or installing a firmware update. Let it finish before adding it. |
| Flashing purple and red | Linking failed. Factory reset every switch in that circuit, then link them again. |
| Flashing red and yellow | A critical error. Don't keep retrying, just get in touch and we'll sort it out. |

Other possibilities
- The switch was already added to another account or home. A switch can only live in one home at a time. If it was paired before, factory reset it first.
- You're not the owner of the home. Guests can use switches but can't add them. Ask whoever set up the home to add the switch, or to make you an Owner.
- The switch is already linked in a multiway. Once switches are linked, a switch has to be factory reset before it can be linked or paired again.
- You haven't created a home yet. You'll need one before you can add a device. See How can I create a home in the Deako app?
- The switch added fine but won't turn the light on. That's a wiring fault rather than a pairing one. In a single pole location it's usually the line and load wires reversed. In a 3-way it's usually traveler wires connected to the wrong ports on the backplate, which lets the switch boot but not control the light. See Switch Behavior by Wiring Issue.
