The Smart Dimmer can be used in multiway circuits, where two or more switches control the same light(s). To work properly in this setup, you must use a combination of Remote Smart Dimmers and one Master Smart Dimmer.
1. Confirm it’s the right fit
Use this guide if your light is controlled by two or more switches.
-
You’ll need:
1 Master Smart Dimmer
1 or more Remote Smart Dimmers (depending on how many switches control the light)
If your light is controlled by just one switch, follow the Single-Pole Smart Dimmer Install Guide.
2. Remove the Existing Switches
Remove all of the existing switches that control the light. Each slot will be replaced with either a Remote Smart Dimmer or the Master Smart Dimmer.
3. Install the Remotes First
Begin installing Remote Smart Dimmers into the empty switch slots, one at a time.
-
After inserting a Remote, look for the green LED at the bottom to flash within a few seconds.
If it flashes, leave the Remote installed.
If it does not flash, remove it and try it in another slot.
Continue until all Remote Smart Dimmers are installed and only one slot remains empty.
The last remaining empty slot is reserved for the Master Smart Dimmer.
4. Install the Master Smart Dimmer
Insert the Master Smart Dimmer into the last remaining slot (the one reserved for the Master).
5. Link the Master and Remote Smart Dimmers
Once all switches are in place, link them together so they function as one circuit:
-
On each switch, press and hold the translucent/gray config button until the LED flashes purple, then release. Do this for every switch in the circuit.
Purple (linking) mode times out in about 2 minutes.
Once all switches are in purple mode, go to any one switch and press and hold the config button again until its LED changes from purple to white, then release.
The other switches will automatically turn white, and the light(s) in your home may turn on/off during linking.
After the LED indicators turn off, linking is complete. The switches should now control the light(s) normally from each location.
Important:
Wait until linking is fully complete before snapping the faceplates back on. The config button is located under the faceplate and may need to be accessed during linking.
If a switch has already been linked, it must be factory reset before it can be re-linked or used in another circuit.
3. Add to the Deako App
After installation, add your Smart Dimmer to the Deako app to unlock remote control, schedules, and more.
Next Steps
Once your Smart Dimmer is in the app, set up smart features to get the most out of it:
-
Schedules – Automate lights to follow sunrise/sunset or turn on/off at set times.
With a Smart Dimmer, you can also schedule brightness levels (e.g., 30% at sunset, 100% at sunrise).
-
Scenes – Trigger multiple lights or actions with a tap or long-press.
Scenes can include custom dim levels along with on/off actions.
-
Groups – Control multiple lights together in one place.
Scenes can include custom dim levels along with on/off actions.
Timers – Have lights automatically turn off after a set time.
Integrations – Connect to Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and more for voice control and whole-home automation.
4. Troubleshooting
The lights behave oddly at different dim levels.
If the light works fine at 100% brightness but flickers when dimmed, check the bulb as it may not be dimmable. Non-dimmable bulbs often flicker when paired with a dimmer.
If the light dims smoothly but shuts off at lower levels, the bulb may not support dimming that low. Different lights have different dimming ranges. You can fix this by adjusting the low-end trim setting in the Deako app — see How to Adjust Dimmer Trim Settings.
The lights flicker randomly or intermittently.
This can sometimes happen if other devices are on the same circuit. If it persists, contact Deako Support for help.
