The Simple Astronomical Timer Switch is designed for automating exterior lights to turn on or off based on sunrise and sunset times. It’s a popular option in states like California, where Title 24 requires this type of control for energy efficiency.
Follow these steps to get your switch up and running.
1. Confirm it’s the right fit
The Simple Astronomical Timer Switch is a single-pole switch. This means it is designed for lights controlled by a single switch.
Popular locations: Exterior lights, outdoor security lighting, porch lights
Not a good fit: Hallways, stairwells, or any fixture controlled by multiple switches (3-way or 4-way circuits)
If your light is controlled by just 1 switch, the Simple Astronomical Timer Switch will work correctly.
If your light is controlled by two or more switches, the Simple Astronomical Timer Switch will not work correctly.
2. Install the Simple Astronomical Timer Switch
Grab the faceplate and pull it off to remove the existing switch’s faceplate.
Pull the blue tab on the backplate to release the old switch (this mechanically and electrically disconnects it), then remove the old switch.
Insert the Simple Astronomical Timer Switch into the backplate.
Gently push the switch in while pushing the blue tab back in to lock it in place and connect it electrically.
Snap the faceplate back on to complete installation.
That’s it — no tools, breaker shutoff, or electrician required.

3. Programming the Simple Astronomical Timer Switch
The Simple Astronomical Timer Switch will function as a basic on/off switch immediately after installation.
To enable automation (time-based schedules or sunrise/sunset schedules), the switch must be programmed.

Or follow the included instructions carefully.
Programming sets up your location, date, and time so the switch can calculate sunrise and sunset accurately.
Troubleshooting
The switch can’t control the light at all.
Confirm the switch is installed in a single-pole location. The Simple Astronomical Timer Switch will not function in 3-way or 4-way circuits.
Try the switch in another single-pole location. This helps rule out wiring issues — incorrect wiring may not affect a basic rocker switch, but it will prevent the Astronomical Timer from working.
The switch works manually, but schedules don’t run.
The switch has not been programmed yet. Programming is required for time-based or sunrise/sunset automation.
