If your smart switches are having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi, follow the steps below. Start with the basic checks, then move on to advanced troubleshooting if needed.
Basic Checks
Verify your network information
- The Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password are case sensitive.
- Pay close attention to characters that look similar, such as “l” (lowercase L) and “I” (uppercase i).
- Double check those exact network name and password work on another device, such as your phone. If that device cannot connect, your Deako devices won't either.
- Make sure that your Wi-Fi network is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz, sometimes this is disabled in your router's settings.
Update network info while at home
- The Deako app sends Wi-Fi credentials from your phone to the switch over Bluetooth.
- You must be within 15 feet of the switch for best results.
Restart your phone
- A simple restart can clear temporary issues and allow the setup to continue.
Check your switches
- If only some switches are not connecting, confirm they are still installed and working as normal wall switches. If necessary try power cycling the switch.
- Delete any switches from your Deako app that are no longer installed or in use.
Advanced Checks
Remote and Integration Control
- Remote control and integrations such as Alexa or the Alarm.com app require the bridge device to be online.
- In your Wi-Fi settings, check which device is acting as the bridge.
- Make sure this device:
- Is properly installed in the wall.
- Is currently online and connected to Wi-Fi (no error icons next to it on the Home page)
- Make sure this device:
- If you are unsure which device is serving as the bridge, contact Deako Support for help.
Switches Connect but Disconnect Later
- If switches connect successfully but later drop off, your router may be pushing them off the network.
- Common causes:
- Band steering, where the router attempts to move devices from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz. Deako switches can only connect to 2.4 GHz, but some routers still attempt to push them.
- Solutions:
- Disable band steering in your router settings.
- Or create a separate 2.4 GHz / IoT network in your router’s app or admin console.
