First things first...
1. Create a home in the Deako app
- Download the Deako app
- Create an account
- Give the Deako app Bluetooth and Location permissions
- Follow the in-app instructions to create your home
Confused or stuck? Shake your phone while the Deako app is open & you can send a report right to our support team!
2. Have your WiFi network name & password handy

YOUR FIRST DEVICE
Setting up a Smart Switch
Let’s start by setting up a Smart Switch to control your front door light. If you’d rather set it up somewhere else, just make sure it’s a light controlled by only one switch - if multiple switches control the same lights, see FAQ here.
1. Grab a Smart Switch
Grab a Smart Switch and go to the switch that controls your front door light.
Don’t know which one is a Smart Switch? There’s a label on the back with the switch’s name!
2. Remove current switch
- Insert a card under the top corner of the faceplate
- Pop the faceplate off by prying outward
3. Insert Smart Switch
- Align the blue tab on the backplate with the top of the switch
- While pressing the switch inwards, push in the blue tab
- Wait for the configure button at the bottom of the switch to flash green and then turn off
IMPORTANT
If your switch does not flash green when inserted into the backplate, call or email Deako support to let them know.
4. Add switch to the Deako App
- Open the Deako app and select the ➕ icon at the bottom of the home screen to add a device.
- Follow the instructions in the app to pair your Smart Switch.
Setting up a Master & Remote Smart Dimmer
Congrats on setting up your first Deako device! Now let’s set up two devices that control the same light.
HEADS UP
This is one of the trickiest Deako device installations. The Master and Remote Smart Dimmers must be inserted into the correct backplates to function.
But don’t worry—our configuration lights indicate the right location for each device. Take it slow, and if you get confused by the lights, head to the FAQ or call our Deako support team.
1. Find a light controlled by two switches
Grab one Master Smart Dimmer & one Remote Smart Dimmer and go to a light that is controlled by two switches. Confirm that the physical bulb (usually printed towards the base) says that it is dimmable.
These are usually found in hallways, stairwells, or large rooms with multiple entrances.
2. Test switches
Test the current switches to ensure you know exactly which switches control the light.
Using sticky notes to mark these switch locations makes them easier to remember.
3. Remove current switches
Remove both faceplates & switches from the two locations.
4. Insert Remote Smart Dimmer
Insert the Remote Smart Dimmer, then wait to see if the configure button flashes green (to learn more about the configuration button light check out this key). If it does not flash green, remove the switch and try it in the second location.
IMPORTANT
If your switch does not flash green in either location, call or email Deako support to let them know your switch did not flash green when you inserted it into the backplate.
5. Put switch into linking mode
Press & hold the configure button until it begins flashing purple.
Your switch will stay in linking mode (flashing purple) for 3 minutes.
6. Repeat with Master Smart Dimmer
Repeat steps 4-5, inserting the Master Smart Dimmer into the second location.
7. Confirm all switches are in linking mode
Confirm both switches are flashing purple.
8. Link switches
Press & hold the configure button of either switch until it begins flashing white. Both switches will begin flashing white for about 45 seconds. You may see the light they control turn on and off. Wait until your switches stop flashing to move to the next step.
9. Test switches
After they stop flashing test to see if you can control them from each switch. Not working right? You can always factory reset your devices and try again.
10. Add switches to the Deako App
Follow the steps here to add them to the Deako App.
Setting up a Single Pole Smart Dimmer
The process for setting up a Single Pole Smart Dimmer is the same as setting up a Smart Switch. You can use the steps here for reference.
Just remember you can use Single Pole Smart Dimmers only where one switch controls the light.
We recommend using this device in dining areas, family rooms, or bedrooms.
That covers installation for all types of smart devices
Setting up the rest of your smart devices
Use the previous steps to set up the rest of your Deako smart devices. Check out the FAQ here for lights controlled by more than two devices and other questions. Next, we’ll go over how to set up the simple devices.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT mix Simple Switches with Smart Switches or Smart Dimmers on lights controlled by multiple switches. The devices will not be able to control the light.

Setting up a Simple Motion Sensor
The Simple Motion Sensor can be used only where a single switch controls the light.
1. Grab a Simple Motion Sensor
Grab a Simple Motion Sensor and head to where you’d like to use it.
2. Remove current switches
Pop the faceplate off using the included card and remove the switch.
3. Insert Simple Motion Sensor
Insert your Simple Motion Sensor, then wait 45 seconds while the switch calibrates.
OPTIONAL Changing Simple Motion Sensor settings
Remove the button cover by pulling outwards from the top.
Occupancy mode
Light will automatically turn on when the switch detects motion and automatically turn off when the selected time delay expires.
If the light is manually turned off, it will not turn back on automatically for 5 minutes even if it senses motion.
Vacancy mode
Light will turn on only when you press the button and automatically turn off when the selected time delay expires.
If the switch senses motion within 5 minutes of the light automatically turning off, the light will automatically turn back on.
Setting up a Simple Dimmer
If you’re installing a Simple Dimmer on a light controlled by more than one switch, the other switches must be 3-Way or 4-Way Simple Rocker Switches. If you bought a home with Deako installed, these switches are already in your home.
1. Grab a Simple Dimmer
Grab a Simple Dimmer and head to the location you’d like to use it in. Confirm that the physical bulb (usually printed towards the base) says that it is dimmable.
2. Remove current switch
Pop the faceplate off using the included card and remove the switch.
3. Insert Simple Dimmer
4. Turn off & dim light
Turn the light off and dim it all the way down.
5. Turn wheel to the right
Turn the small wheel on the lower left of the switch all the way to the right (counterclockwise).
6. Toggle the switch
- If the light turns on, you’re done
- If the light does not turn on, move on to the next step
7. Adjust to lowest brightness
Closely observe your light while slowly turning the wheel to the left (clockwise), stopping every few seconds to allow the switch to adjust. Stop when your light turns on and reaches the lowest possible brightness.
8. Test for flickering
Turn the light off then on again to ensure it stays at the correct level. Slide the dimmer up and down while observing the light to verify there is no flickering.
Frequently asked questions
You can set the exact dim level you’d like at the lowest and highest points of your dimmer. You can adjust the dimming range for your smart dimmers by editing the device in the Deako app.
Try this:
- Check if the physical bulb (usually printed towards the base) says that it is dimmable.
- Try the switch somewhere else in the home and see if it also flickers. If its still flickering, contact Deako support.
For more information about our devices, check out our device guides.
The process is similar to the steps you followed here. You will repeat inserting devices and putting them into flashing purple until your reach the last device. For full instructions, scan the QR code.
Deako supports 2.4 GHz networks. If you have two WiFi networks, usually one will have a 5 at the end and the other will have a 2.4 or no number. Make sure to use the one that has a 2.4 or no number.
If you are having continued issues connecting your WiFi, contact our support team.
You’ll need a different Smart Dimmer depending on how many switches control the light.
If only one switch controls the light, use the Single-Pole Smart Dimmer.
If multiple switches control the light, you’ll want to use one Master Smart Dimmer, and all the rest will be Remote Smart Dimmers.
Press & hold the configure button for 10 seconds (the LED will be appear solid red).
Try this:
- Double check you’ve given the Deako app Bluetooth and Location permissions (sometimes Bluetooth permissions are called Nearby Device permissions).
- Remove the switch and reinsert it.
- If you are still having issues, contact Deako support.
