You can use a Smart Switch and Single Pole Smart Dimmer to diagnose wiring issues that prevent non-rocker switches from working properly.
Single pole locations:
- Verify rocker switch controls the lights properly

Install Smart Switch
-if it powers on as evident by a green LED flash behind the config button, neutral is present
-if it does not power on, neutral is not connected.
*note- after resolving the no neutral fault, be sure to test with the Single Pole Smart Dimmer to confirm polarity is correct
- Install Single Pole Smart Dimmer
-if it powers on as evident by a green LED flash behind the config button polarity is correct and neutral is connected
-it does not power on but the Smart Switch did, then the backplate has wiring fault of line/load reversed. This means the line wire is plugged into the load port and the load wire is plugged into the line port, they need to be switched.
Multiway locations:- Verify rocker switches control the lights properly
- Remove rocker switch from 1 location only. Rocker switches must be installed in other locations when conducting this test.

Install Smart Switch
-if it powers on as evident by a green LED flash behind the config button, neutral is present
-if it does not power on, then the backplate has wiring fault of neutral wire is not connected
- Re-install rocker switch, then repeat with other locations
